Google opent de deuren

Op 1 april (geen grapje) opende Google zijn deuren tijdens de Google Data Center Efficiency Summit.

De sessies gaven een kijkje in de keuken met wat interessante innovaties:

Containers Based Data Center

· Speaker: Jimmy Clidaras

· 45 containers (222KW each/max is 250Kw – 780W/sq ft)

· Showed pictures of containerized data centers

· 300×250’ of container hanger

· 10MW facility

· Water side economizer

· Chiller bybass

o Limit chiller hours via raised temp inside

· High efficiency transformers: 99.5%

· 27C (81F) cold aisle

· Distributed UPS (each server has a lead accede battery).

o Distributed on-board UPS

o Single voltage motherboard (12v)

o Motherboard provides 5v to disk and all step downs needed by on board requirements

o Only enough power in UPS to allow generators to start or to switch to other A/C supply

Brussel komt met nieuw ‘Groen ICT’ plan

Na het uitbrengen van de Datacenter Code of Conduct, komt de EU nu met een uitgebreider ‘Groen ICT’ plan.

Yesterday, the EU assembly’s industry committee adopted a report which suggests that boosting green public procurement, including mandatory application of energy efficiency standards.

De EU buigt zich op dit moment over de juiste route, waarbij in eerste instantie ‘groene’ inkoop en stimulatie van onderzoek en ontwikkeling binnen de ICT sector voorop staan.

Energie management; Cisco

Met de introductie van ‘Green IT’ en de noodzaak voor betere grip op energie gebruik en efficiëntie komt de vraag; wat gebruik ik eigenlijk aan energie en waar gaat het naar toe ?

Traditioneel is energie voorziening onderdeel van het facilitaire domein. Echter nu begint IT zich er tegen aan te bemoeien.

Binnen facilitaire technieken is integratie altijd al een lastig onderdeel; het domein is lang niet zo gestandaardiseerd als het IT domein. Er zijn veel leverancier specifieke protocollen. Als er al standaard facilitaire protocollen worden gebruikt (zoals BACnet) dan zijn deze lastig te integreren met het IT domein. Vanuit IT perspectief zou het mooi zijn als de facilitaire systemen (airco’s, verlichting, PDU’s) allemaal IP begrijpen en, bijvoorbeeld, via SNMP uit te vragen zijn. Dat begrijpt de IT-er tenminste.

Integratie is echter wel de sleutel naar controle. Dat zien diverse leveranciers van gebouw beheer systemen ook.

Dit was ook de conclusie van diverse onderdelen uit de Datacenter Pulse Summit; in de top 10 staat op 7. End to End IT/Facilities Measurement.

Next step for your datacenter

We have stepped from our traditional, clean, raised floor datacenter to datacenters in tents, datacenters in containers, datacenters on ships, out at sea. Now its time for the next step; put your datacenter in space.

According to Virgin Galactic’s  Will Whitehorn this will be the next available step.

Nieuwe containers

Ne de markt voor datacenter containers begint warm te lopen duiken er hier en daar (nieuwe) kleine bedrijven op die datacenter containers leveren. Zo was op CEBIT de container van AST Global:

Ook Lampertz liet een container variatie zien van de secure rooms die ze al een tijdje leveren, de Lampertz Outdoor Room:

Datacenter site selectie

Selectie van de juiste locatie voor de bouw van een datacenter is de basis. In DatacenterDynamics Focus magazine stond een aardig artikel hier over met wat links:

Deze geven een aardige aanzet om je eigen site selectie op te zetten.

En toen deed hij het even niet…

Pingdom.com en ISPam.nl publiceerden overzichten van downtime in verschillende datacenters in 2008. Bij Pingdom waren ze wat generiek;

We have gathered 10 of the most noteworthy incidents on the Internet in 2008. This was another eventful year, full of its share of accidents and incidents that disrupted the Internet and the WWW. We have included problems ranging from website outages and service issues to large-scale network interruptions.

ISPam richtte zich vooral op stroomuitval in de Nederlandse datacenters;

Totaal zijn er door ISPam.nl 14 stroomstoringen geregistreerd in 11 verschillende datacentra. Ondanks dit grote aantal al is dit waarschijnlijk maar het topje van de ijsberg, omdat niet elke stroomstoring bij de ISPam.nl redactie bekend is.

Resultaten eerste Datacenter Pulse bijeenkomst

Op de Datacenter Pulse community website zijn de resultaten van de eerste bijeenkomst gepubliceerd.

On February 17th, 2009 Data Center Pulse held its first global summit in Santa Clara California, just five short months after starting this new end user datacenter community. The membership, 700 strong, identified seven of the top areas they wanted to address at this summit. The final topics and participants were finalized on the day of the event.

Each track was lead by group members. Even in these difficult economic times more than 15% of the membership base participated in person and online, some members traveling from as far away as Chile to participate in this inaugural event.

The goal of the summit was to discuss the topic areas and present the findings to the data center industry, just 36 hours later. We wanted to provide rapid reporting on what we found so the vendors, consultants and other providers can absorb and ultimately work with us to provide the solutions to the challenges we’re facing.

Na de bijeenkomst op 17feb werden de resultaten door gestuurd naar leden in Nederland en India voor review en feedback. De dag er na werden de resultaten met de datacenter industrie gedeeld en besproken.

Afval als datacenter energie

Zowel GreenerComputing als DatacenterKnowledge brengen een verhaal over datacenter energie voorziening via methaangas. Deze methaangas komt o.a. vrij bij afval verwerking.


T-systems in Munchen gebruikt inmiddels een dergelijke technologie.

Ook andere zijn druk bezig met deze technologie:

Fujifilm announced in 2007 that it would use methane from a nearby landfill to help power its manufacturing plant in Greenwood, S.C. Last year Google said it would pay for the building of a greenhouse that would reuse methane. The greenhouse is near a data center it’s building in western North Carolina, and paying for it would allow Google to win carbon credits so it could claim environmental friendliness.
